Occupy Chavez Ravine: The “Blue Bum” Paintings of Stephen Seemayer, an exhibition featuring a selection from the 58 L.A. Blue Bum paintings, and related documentation, completed by the artist during the 2011 baseball season. Inspired by the Brooklyn Bum, the brilliant creation of the late sports cartoonist Willard Mullin, Seemayer’s Blue Bum paintings candidly comment on the follies and triumphs of the Los Angeles Dodgers under the ownership of Frank and Jamie McCourt. In conjunction with its exhibition, Occupy Chavez Ravine: The “Blum Bum” Paintings of Stephen Seemayer, the Baseball Reliquary presents a reception for the artist. Seemayer will discuss the legacy of sports cartoonist Willard Mullin, who provided inspiration for his L.A. In celebration of Black History Month, the Baseball Reliquary and Allendale Branch Library present a program on Emmett Ashford, the first African American umpire to officiate in both minor and major league baseball. The late umpire’s daughter, Adrienne Cherie Ashford, will discuss her father’s extraordinary career and legacy; will sign copies of her biography, Strrr-ike!!: Emmett Ashford, Major League Umpire; and will show video clips of her father working games in the 1970 World Series. The Baseball Reliquary and Allendale Branch Library present a reading, discussion, and book signing with Matthew McGough, author of Bat Boy: Coming of Age with the New York Yankees. McGough’s memoir of his teenage days in the Bronx and his two years as a bat boy with the Yankees (1992-93) is a witty and entertaining look at the inner world of baseball. Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick, an exhibition which utilizes photographs, artworks, artifacts, and documents to chronicle the life and times of one of the most influential figures in baseball history. The owner of four teams – the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns, and Chicago White Sox (twice) – Veeck was a baseball impresario and innovator, an unflinching advocate of racial equality, and a visionary who spent a lifetime challenging baseball’s and society’s well-entrenched status quo. The exhibition is based on Paul Dickson’s biography, Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick (Walker & Company, New York, ISBN 9780802717788), to be published in April 2012. And the Walls Came Tumblin’ Down: Pioneers of Baseball’s Integration, an exhibition which utilizes photographs, artworks, artifacts, and documents to examine some of the figures who played pivotal roles in integrating baseball, including Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Satchel Paige, Branch Rickey, Bill Veeck, Lester Rodney, and Emmett Ashford. In conjunction with its exhibition, Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick, the Baseball Reliquary presents “VeeckFest,” an in-depth look at Bill Veeck, the transformational, visionary figure, whose life and imagination helped define the several eras he encompassed. The event will include a film screening; book signing; and panel discussion featuring, among others, Paul Dickson, author of Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick; sportswriters John Schulian and Ron Rapoport, who covered Veeck for the Chicago Sun-Times and other publications; and screenwriter/filmmaker Ken Solarz, who owns the movie rights to Veeck’s 1962 autobiography, Veeck—as in Wreck. Baseball by the Books, an exhibition spotlighting some of the classic baseball books, both fiction and non-fiction, to be published since World War II – works which have made a significant contribution to the field of baseball literature and which are indispensable to any baseball library.
